Conversations are the heart and soul of your existence in this world. Conversations get you to introduced to new people, learn from your mentors and superiors, teach your juniors and youngsters, get work done from others, share your feelings and experiences and basically communicate with people. For those who are not blessed with the inborn talent of good conversations, can learn and master this useful art. Some essential elements for the Art of good conversation are: listening attentively, ask relevant and good questions and pay attention to the answers.
Show interest and be curious. Interesting people are curious and genuinely interested in other people, as they like learning new things. Showing interest in others makes them more comfortable and share information. Maintaining eye contact demonstrates your genuineness and confidence. If you are the kind of person who takes time to warm up, then you may steer the conversation in such a way that the other person gets to talk more and share their insights.
Balance the conversation. Avoid a monologue on either end and balance the conversation to make it about everyone and that all present get to speak and share. Be totally aware and live in the present moment. Focus and concentrate at the conversation. Give it your best. Keep smartphones and other electronic gadgets at bay, to avoid distractions. Pause for breath and observe other’s body language. Then, proceed accordingly.
Be interesting and a good storyteller. If you read a lot, travel, explore, indulge in intelligent conversations with knowledgeable people, pursue hobbies and creative pursuits, are well-informed, then you will have interesting topics and conversations to discuss. No one wants to hear about daily routine, health issues and problems. Keep updated with latest market trends, what is going on, news headlines, economy and the Government, fashion, music etc. to contribute significantly to conversations and people’s lives.
Relax and be yourself. Do not try to be fake and presumptuous. Do not judge others and try to rush conversations. Avoid hogging the discussion. Slow down and take a deep breath. Relax, be yourself and go with the flow. Visualization and Meditation help you relax when you want to. They help you control your mind. Smiling and a positive attitude always helps. If a person does not reciprocate, it is always better to move on. Learn to say No and take No for an answer with confidence and positivity.
Practice the art of making good conversations. The art of good conversations is a skill, that can be learnt and honed, with practice. Expose yourself to different social situations. Take constructive feedback from people who are your genuine well-wishers.

Indulge in small talk. Small talk about general topics makes people comfortable and helps them open. They pave way to deeper conversations. Be careful to avoid conflicted topics that may be debatable and may hurt people’s sentiments. Small talk is generally about any event that you have attended or any experience that you have had. It is always nice to share.
Ask good questions and be attentive to the replies. Be mindful of where the discussion is going. You can steer the conversation in any way you want. Ensure that it is fruitful and a learning experience. Look for opportunities to ask relevant questions, that show the way for deeper conversations. Keep potential questions at the back seat in your mind. Explore opportunities to learn more about the other person and show genuine interest, but not so much that the other person feels uncomfortable. Be specific and curious at the same time.
Be nice and courteous. Be open, friendly, polite, humble and courteous. Smile and be nice. It will move the conversation positively and others will open easily. Be receptive and mindful of your body language. Crossed arms or legs or both, frown on the face, wandering eyes as well as appearing distracted can show that you either not interested in the conversation or are opinionated, stubborn, closed and dominating. All these traits make others uncomfortable and are roadblocks for a good and healthy conversation.
Do not fret over being right always and proving your point. Do not embarrass others and try to prove them wrong. It is alright to let the other person feel right and good, sometimes. There is no harm in letting others win. It is better to lose arguments than lose people. Learn to utilize silence well, to muse, think, ponder, analyse or change the subject.
Allow other people to talk. Never make any conversation just about you with your stories, anecdotes, explanations and experiences. Everyone involved must have a fair chance of talking and sharing. Focus on others, otherwise people might lose interest.
Keep it light and approachable. Make conversations healthy, open and positive. If you complaining about professional life, health, relationships and other problems in life a lot, people will start avoiding you as everyone has their own share of troubles to deal with. People are attracted towards a positive attitude and friendly nature, with sensitivity about others.
Master these simple tips to have good conversations with people. Love, kindness, humility, friendliness and overall a good intention with a positive attitude will make you win people and communicate more effectively. You will learn more and feel better about yourself.
