Focus is intention. Concentration is what you do with that intention. Focus is where you choose to concentrate. Concentration means control of attention. It is the ability of the mind to focus on a particular object or thought and filter out everything else – all other unrelated thoughts, sensations, feelings and ideas. It requires huge mental strength,

resilience and will power. Focus and concentration make you better at your job, at home, with people and every other facet of life. You become more productive, efficient and effective. Modern lifestyle and its associated factors such as insufficient sleep, irregular eating and sleeping habits, excessive use of electronic gadgets, distraction, less physical activity and the environment are all instrumental in the rapid decline of focus and concentration. Here are few ways you can increase them and control yourself and your life positively.

• Eliminate distraction: Block a schedule of your time to do a particular task. Switch off your phone, social media and people at that time and request to be left alone. Shutting off internal and external disturbances will increase your focus and efficiency.

• Decrease multitasking: Multitasking though might feel good, but it spells low focus and concentration and poor productivity. It compromises your work quality and may lead to burnout. Decrease multitasking and focus on one job wholly at a time.

• Eat well: Eat a balanced and nutritious diet, to remain energetic, vigorous and alert throughout the day. Avoid fried and junk food. Decrease your caffeine, sugar, salt and processed food intake as they clog the brain.

• Exercise daily and well: Physical exercise, yoga and kriyas detoxify the body and mind and sharpen your focus and concentration.

• Sleep well and on time: Avoid late night eating and screen time before sleeping. Set proper timings for sleeping and waking up and follow them regularly. Waking up and going to bed early is in alignment with Nature’s body clock and makes you more focused and alert.

• Create a dedicated space for work: Create a calm, clean, wel-ventilated and de-cluttered space for work. This will increase your concentration powers.

• Use timers: Decide a task to accomplish and then set an alarm. Train your mind to complete the task in the stipulated time.

• Train to focus and live in the moment: Choose consciously to focus. Live in the present moment and feel it entirely.

• Switch tasks: When you get stuck with some work, just keep it aside and move on to something else. Resume after some time and you will be able to accomplish it.

• Take short breaks: Taking short breaks between work, stretching, walking, talking to someone etc. helps increase productivity and enhance concentration.

• Coach your brain: Brain-training puzzles and games will improve your memory and problem-solving skills.

• Set daily goals and priorities: Write down what you want to accomplish the next day and prioritize them. Work hard to achieve them the next day.

• Pursue a soothing hobby such as Music: Music, gardening, painting etc. are like meditation. They help you to focus more and relax you at the same time.

• Connect with Nature: Live a natural and simple life. Have plants around you, soak in the Sun, breathe fresh air and spend time in the company of Nature.

• Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Mindfulness and Meditation strengthen well-being, mental fitness and increase focus and concentration. With practice, you can use breathwork to get back your focus when it starts wavering.

Recognize the areas where you need to improve your focus and concentration. Analyse how easily and how frequently you get distracted. Use the above methods to focus on what matters to you the most in life. With increased concentration, you will be able to achieve more of that you value most and feel better while accomplishing it. It can give you a meaningful, satisfying, rewarding and contented life.
