Have you ever felt misunderstood? Do you struggle with expressing yourself? Have you seen other people communicating effortlessly and you feeling left out? The answer lies in polishing your communication skills. Communication is how we express ourselves and interact with people. We communicate through our body language, posture, eyes, writing or speaking. While written communication is more important in professional life than personal, it is verbal communication that we practice most often. The more effective our communication skills are, the better we will be able to connect with people, form long-lasting bonds, networks and relationships with them, understand our own selves and others’ emotions, feelings and have better conversations and negotiations.

𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈: Focus your attention on what the other person is saying rather than formulating what you are going to say next. It is ok to pause for breath and just listen. As for clarifications. People love to be listened to. Try to have one conversation at one time. There is no point in being all over the place all the time, trying to multitask and in the end achieving nothing. People deserve your undivided attention. While talking, keep electronic gadgets and other distractions away.
𝑩𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒈𝒆: Having a closed body language such as a frown on the face, crossed arms or legs or both are signs that you are not open to hear other people. Be open and flexible. That will reflect in your body language and you will appear more approachable and accessible. Keeping eye contact demonstrates confidence, truthfulness and attention.
Be clear, concise, simple and specific. It is very important to be crystal clear in the mind first and that reflects in our speech. Introspect and explore thoughts in your head first. Include the heart with the mind. Feel and experience before speaking. This will give more clarity as well as power to your words. People will be more influenced by you and will want to listen to you more.
Know what you want to achieve and convey. It is imperative to know and understand yourself completely, in order to know others and to express ourselves to others. Deliberate on the pros and cons of a thought or idea. Think whether what you say will influence or help the other person positively or not. Think from all angles and the other person’s shoes. Know what you want to convey and what is the best way to formulate it, so that it makes an impact. Begin with the end in mind.
Think before you speak. Pause and think before you speak. It is not necessary to utter the first word that comes to your mind. Pay attention and introspect on what and how you are going to speak. It avoids embarrassments, miscommunication and confusion. Learn to listen to your inner voice, that always guides you and supplies you with better ideas and solutions.
Maintain a positive attitude and smile. Positivity and a smile reflects not only your face but also in your voice and attitude. Being calm, composed and positive makes your conversations better, you listen more, you learn more, people trust you more, they like you better and are charmed by your company. Be humble in narrating accomplishments and thoughtful while discussing various sensitive topics.
Be open minded and non – judgmental. Be relaxed and open-minded towards the viewpoints, opinions, experiences and feelings of others. Do not judge others. You do not know what their circumstances and situations are. Everyone has their own choices, preferences and beliefs in life and they are entitled to lead their lives the way they want.
Practice acceptance, forgiveness and unconditional love for all. If you want a peaceful, happy life with good interpersonal relationships and receive love and respect from all, you must accept people as they are. Forgive them for doing and thinking all those things that you do not agree with and forgive yourself too. Give unconditional love for all as that is the innate human nature. Whatever we give, comes back manifold to us. The energy and vibrations that we project will revert to us in the same way.
All the above things enhance your communication skills and make you more effectively express yourself and likeable by people. These simple but golden rules make you a brilliant communicator and even brighten your professional aspects and livens up your personal lives.
