Health is a state of complete physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. Holistic health is a concept and approach that simultaneously addresses all these parameters and treats the person as a whole; not an isolated disease or condition. For example – stress is a psychological problem, but it affects physical health such as headaches, anxiety, weight gain, substance addictions, insomnia etc. Research has proved that having close interpersonal relationships reduces stress levels, improves mental and emotional well-being and cures various diseases.
Holistic Health delves in all these areas – body, mind, spirit, people around you, culture and environment. Wellness is a huge area that needs a lot of hard work, dedication, focus and sincere efforts by the person. It is imperative to change old habits and form new habits for a healthier and better you. Prioritizing self-care, taking out time for yourself, self-grooming, introspection, making better and healthier choices and lifestyle modifications are vital to be holistically healthy and fit.
There are various therapies and recommendations that boost overall health and wellness. Some of them are:
𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞: Regular and rigorous physical exercise is important to increase fitness, agility, flexibility, stamina and muscular strength. Pick up an outdoor sport or an exercise regimen and make it a habit to do it daily. Working out at the gymnasium, swimming, running, stretching, cycling and others are great activities to enhance physical health.
𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐲𝐚𝐬: Yoga, Pranic Kriyas and Sookshma Kriyas align all our subtle bodies, mind and soul. The intensive breathing techniques increase focus, concentration, endurance, resilience, healing powers, will-power and awareness. Make them a way of life. If you do not have a Self-realized Master to teach them to you, there are countless tutorials available on the web, most of them free of cost where you can coach yourself.
𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬: It is important to rest well, on an average of 6-8 hours a day. Sleep is not only relaxing, but also rejuvenating. It is during sleep that our body’s healing powers work and repair damages, if any. Rising early morning and going to bed early is in tune with Nature. Sleeping and waking up late is extremely detrimental to physical, mental and spiritual health.
𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬: It is said that we become what we eat. Make sure to eat a healthy and balanced diet, comprising minerals, vitamins, proteins, fibre, water, carbohydrates and fats. Drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. Eat at least 2 -3 hours before going to bed at night. Consume a lot of fruits and salads. Avoid junk, fried and processed food. Eat slowly, conscious of every morsel. Pray while eating, thanking all those who have made this portion of food come to you.
𝐍𝐨 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: Learn to say NO with confidence. In this dynamic stressful environment of corporates and modern living, addiction to vices such as alcohol, drugs, smoking, non-vegetarian food, sexual addiction etc. is becoming rampant. Peer-pressure, the pressure to ‘fit in’ with the modern society and the inability to say No are the primary factors that make one addicted to vices. For a healthy body, mind and soul, you must abstain from these vices and learn to turn to yourself for all answers and solutions. Being completely healthy increases longevity, youthfulness and peacefulness.
𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤: Positive mental attitude is a choice that one must make to be joyful, peaceful, successful and happy. Positivity stems from within. It is a two-forked approach. On one hand, one must refrain from all negative thoughts and information from entering the brain and if it enters, has no effect on us. On the other hand, feeding positive information and positive affirmations boost our feeling of wellness, confidence, happiness, positivity and success. Stay away from dead news and choose consciously what to feed your mind. Access social media and electronic gadgets in a limited way. Overuse and abuse of them can decrease your energy levels and hamper your health in many ways. Avoid falling into traps such as superstitions, black magic, making fast money and orthodox beliefs. They are energy vampires. Be simple and goal-oriented.
𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Mindfulness and Meditation are no more a luxury these days or for senior citizens only. Mindfulness is the art of doing everything knowingly and mindfully. Meditation is the science and art of knowing our real self, awakening our dormant healing powers and infinite potential and purifying our body, mind and soul. It is one of the most important tools for attaining complete health and all the above activities contribute to better experiences in meditation as well as fabulous results in overall health and wellness.
